I once heard a Christian leader say, “We’re in love with a Person,” and it is true. The Father is not some distant Entity we cannot comprehend or know, but He is a Person who is knowable. When Sue and I heard this message years ago, it set within us the reality of knowing God, and this reality has never left.
What hope we have as the family of God—it is possible to know Him.
Sometimes we get wrapped up in Bible study, prayer meetings, reading Christian books, serving one another, etc. All those things are good, but they do not take the place of divine intimacy, of being close to the Lord.
We have to remember God is knowable. And anyone can know Him. Not just those who seem accomplished spiritually, but the simple, everyday folks as well, like the frustrated stay-at-home mom, the grandma who is lonely, the factory worker, the bus driver. All of us are on equal ground where knowing God is concerned.
Consider Brother Lawrence, the subject of the book The Practice of the Presence of God. He lived in the 1600s and served as a friar in a monastery—first as a cook and later as a repairer of sandals. For over sixteen years, while serving in what others might consider lowly positions, he learned to work with God by His side.
Knowing God Through the Holy Spirit
To get to know the Lord, we need the Holy Spirit.
The last thing Paul told the Corinthians was, “Remember to spend time alone with God as you fellowship with the Holy Spirit.” Jesus taught about the Holy Spirit and knowing Him as a Person:
There is so much more I would like to say to you, but it’s more than you can grasp at this moment. But when the truth-giving Spirit comes, he will unveil the reality of every truth within you. He won’t speak on his own, but only what he hears from the Father, and he will reveal prophetically to you what is to come. (John 16:12–13 TPT)
For us as the children of God, the divine message always comes through the Holy Spirit. Whether He speaks through the Word or in our heart, that is true. He is our Helper, comforter, and truth. He is the Giver of spiritual gifts and the Friend who sticks closer than a brother. He develops His good fruit within us (we look like Him because of Him). He works with awesome power, performs miracles, releases healing, delivers from oppression, saves from trouble, and sustains as He guides.
One prophetic individual even said, “On earth, the Holy Spirit is God.” What does that mean?
The Bible makes it clear that Jesus and the Father are both in heaven. Jesus is seated there until the Father makes His enemies a footstool (Heb. 1:13), while the Father dwells in unapproachable light (1 Tim. 6:16). So, yes, it is indeed true that on the earth, the Holy Spirit is God. He is teaching us to worship the Father and the Son, and He searches for such worshippers (John 4:23).
The Nearby God
You and I are in love with a Person who is knowable. Not Someone far away who isn’t concerned with our heart, but Someone right here—He is quite close by. May we be filled to overflowing with God as we fellowship with His Spirit.
Now, may the grace and joyous favor of the Lord Jesus Christ, the unambiguous love of God, and the precious communion that we share in the Holy Spirit be yours continually. Amen! (2 Cor. 13:14 TPT)
