Several years ago, a friend of ours gave us a sound system, and we drove down to pick it up. Our friend was part of a large church, and he had a strong prophetic gifting, which fascinated us. We were just becoming familiar with the prophetic, and we loved learning about it.

Our friend’s church was in the middle of a huge building program, and we asked him, “Do you minister here a lot?”

“No, not so much,” he replied.

This surprised us. “Can I ask why?”

“Well,” he said, “I spoke with the pastor, and he’s just not comfortable with prophetic ministry right now in the midst of the building program. He feels it could upset things.”

Are you facing what that pastor faced—a big decision that could make or break you? How can you know you’re making the right choice?

Here’s one way to know for sure.

What Is the Lord Saying?

When we wonder if we’re doing the right thing, asking ourselves the following question can provide so much clarity:

“Am I doing what the Lord told me to do?”

If He told us to focus on the building project, then we are worshiping Him by focusing on the building project. We have to have our own walk with the Lord, the courage to go where He tells us, and the confidence that He will provide as we do what He said. That’s the bottom line.

When anxiety, doubt, and the voice of the world creep in, we have to stand our ground.

“But if I take this risk, all the people might leave! They might stop supporting my ministry. I could lose this thing I’ve worked so hard to build.”

That can feel like a serious concern, but we need to treat it cautiously. Jesus Himself faced the loss of followers.

“Are you going to leave too?” He asked the disciples.

“Where else would we go?” they replied, and so they stayed.

The Courage to Take Risks and Be Different

When we’re in a bind and facing huge financial commitments, if our heart is to follow the Lord, I can’t help but think He will show us the way. We don’t need to be concerned with people leaving—unless He has told us to be concerned about it.

“What is the Lord saying?” If that is our main concern, we will be infinitely happier and more at peace, and we will know in our heart that we are pleasing Him.

Contrast our friend’s story with that of another pastor. He was part of a mega church in California that was doing amazing things for God and seeing Him move in fantastic ways. A lot of great things were coming out of this church, but the pastor later said, “You know what? We didn’t even like each other.”

They made a shocking decision and chose to shut everything down. The pastor adopted a different model of church, and now he raises up other pastors to care for people in home groups. Instead of “big,” this man has gone “small.” He had the courage to do something weird and different because he knew what God was saying.

Our Reason for Being

The Lord is outside the pathways of the world. He tends to make different—and sometimes surprising—choices, and He often takes us into unknown lands where we have never been. And maybe no one else has been either.

Are we willing to listen to Him and do what He’s telling us? Is that desire written in the deepest places of our heart? Let’s be willing to follow His voice in all things, because He’s our reason for being.
